Smoke Detectors
Smoke detectors are sometimes overlooked, but having one can be the fine line between life and death. Modern standards require smoke detectors throughout the building and your house. They are linked together so that when one goes off, they all go off, which is a good feature because it allows you to hear the alarm from every part of your home (or office). Excessive dirt and dust can ruin smoke detectors so it is essential to keep them clean. We can help you with installation and maintenance to protect your home from fire. At present, all new buildings (or those with major renovations) or tenanted properties legally require a certain level of smoke detector which is hard wired in. The Australia Government has a schedule whereby all properties, including private homes, will be encompassed into this code by 1st January 2027. This new Queensland Smoke Alarm legislation commenced 1st January 2017 and designated that smoke alarms must be photoelectric and must meet the Australian Standard 3786:2014.
Smoke detectors could easily be found in commercial structures but not as yet in every home. This is interesting as our homes are often our greatest asset – why would we not protect them. Not to mention the safety of our family.
Whilst they are becoming mandatory (or in some instances already are), smoke detectors actually have a strong purpose; they are the first line of defence for fire. It could be as sensitive to detect even smoke from a lit cigarette or matchstick. The alarm will go off making everyone aware of the situation. That additional time, in the instance of a crisis as I said above, can be the difference between life and death. For an older person or the family who needs to gather young children, every additional moment is critical.
Why would you choose smoke detectors from other fire safety devices? Below is an outline of why smoke detectors are the best choice when it comes to fire protection:
- These devices are programmed to automatically warn you of smoke before you can even smell it which gives you plenty of time to evacuate to safety. The blaring sounds of fire alarms will wake everyone up before the fire gets uncontrollable.
- Smoke detectors are budget-friendly and when you think about what we spent on our homes; this cost is a minute fraction. Think of it as part of your insurance policy.
- Smoke detectors are easy to clean and maintain. With the phase out of the battery operated ones, gone are the days of worrying about battery replacement or getting that annoying buzz as the batteries start to wear down.
